Motorcycles:
I love the feeling of freedom that riding motorcycles gives. From my first
bike in 1971 (a 1967 Bridgestone 175ss), to my current bike a 1992 Yamaha
TDM850D which has it's own page on this site. In the years between them I have
had Honda, Harley (actually an Italian Aermacchi with the HD logo on the tank),
and Kawasaki. None of them lasted the near 20 years of the Yamaha TDM... I could
have gotten another bike but after the TDM850 you just don't want to change...
Photography:
Photography is a passion of mine that goes back even further than
motorcycles, when I was about 10 years old I got a Kodak Instamatic for
Christmas. A simple pop in the film cartridge 'point and shoot'. By New Years I
knew the shutter speed of 1/90th second could be reduced to 1/45th by popping on
a used flash-cube. So now I had three exposure settings (wow!).
Flash for nights, normal for sunny days, and 'half-speed' for those overcast
days when the other two were not quite right.
There will be a new Photo Page someday.
Camping:
Love the outdoors, cooking over a campfire, watching all the 'critters'.
First started camping in the fall at college sleeping outside with two wool army blankets and a
ground tarp . It only took one day of waking up with 6 inches of
snow on top of me to upgrade to a mummy bag. Then tents, then campers
(that's a caravan to my brit and aussie mates), now a trailer with a pop-out permanently set up in West
Virginia. Since it's set up permanently may as well add a deck.... no, make that
a bi-level deck. Then the deck got snow and rain on it.. add a roof over the
whole thing. I'm back in a house!
Music:
Cole Porter, Charlie Parker, Charlotte Church (not the recent 'pop' Charlotte,
the original 'classical' Charlotte), Emiko Kai, Renee Olstead, (Renee does
gorgeous jazz renditions of songs like 'Summertime', 'What a difference a day
makes', 'Taking a chance on love'.) Very polished, very mature, it's difficult
to believe that she was only 15 at the time as she can knock out torch songs
like she's channeling jazz ghosts from the past.
Renee Olstead's website.
If you like Piano jazz you want to find a copy of 'Crystal Echo' by Emiko Kai. A woman who puts to rest the notion that piano jazz is a male preserve.
Emiko's website is primarily in Japanese so
I would suggest Google for a rough translation. You can find audio samples by clicking on the 'Message'
link.
I love Jazz, Blues, and Mo-town... but I'm not a fan of Rap, ( actually I hate
it. ) Where is the melody? There is just a beat, maybe 8 notes that go on
and on.
Drilling into your brain with no anesthetic...
Does anyone remember something called a melody?
You know... Music.
Be who you are and say what you
feel,
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind.
~Dr. Seuss
